The short answer
Use a target you have not seen when your aim is a fresh hidden-picture exercise. Reusing a known image can still be useful for reviewing your notes, but it introduces memory. Keep those two activities labeled separately so a remembered detail does not become an apparent new impression.
A familiar image changes the task
A picture can become familiar through a previous round, a filename, a thumbnail, or a conversation. You may remember a feature without immediately remembering where you saw it. If recognition occurs during a session, note it before continuing. That round can remain in your record as familiar-target practice rather than being silently counted as fresh.
Ask a helper to manage the targets
For an offline activity, a willing helper can choose ordinary photographs you have not seen and place them in opaque numbered envelopes. The number should identify the envelope without describing its contents. The helper keeps the mapping and avoids hints. Do not inspect folders, thumbnails, or descriptive filenames before recording your response.
Keep a simple exposure log
Use a notebook with target label, date, fresh or familiar, original response, and feedback. If you have already seen the picture, mark it familiar even if your current guess differs from last time. If you are unsure, mark it unclear. Keeping these categories separate is more useful than trying to remove every imperfect session.
Use old pictures for a different lesson
A known picture is useful for practicing precise description with the answer visible. Describe its largest shapes, positions, and contrasts, then compare your language with the image. Call this observation practice. It can help you produce clearer notes without presenting remembered details as information about something hidden. The target setup reflection explores these distinctions.
Can an app guarantee that every target is new to me?
Do not assume it can. A finite picture collection may repeat, and an app cannot necessarily know every image you have encountered elsewhere. Record any recognition yourself. The goal is a transparent account of the session, including limitations, rather than a perfect-looking score.
